Topic: An Introduction to the Course
Objectives
1. To help students learn how to watch and evaluate authentic English films or videos;
2. To introduce students into the realm of western culture, especially English culture (including British and American culture);
3. To help students get familiar with English literary works, classic and popular, through the form of film or video;
4. To further improve students’ listening ability by watching authentic English films or videos.
Textbooks
1. Discs about English Films or videos (VCD/DVD etc.);
2. Other sources: you are strongly required to search for other relevant materials on the Internet or in the library.
Methods
1. Teacher’s guidance;
2. Cooperative small group work, including group discussion and group report;
3. Independent work.
Content
1) Authentic English films or videos about western culture, or
2) Authentic English films or videos based on scripts adapted from classic or popular English literary works;
3) Other valuable and interesting programs.
Arrangement
1) Teacher’s lecture on film watching and evaluating techniques;
2) Teacher’s introduction to the film concerned;
3) Students’ watching: reading (looking at and understanding the pictures), listening (catching what the roles are saying, i.e., the dialogue or monologue), speaking (imitating what you have heard) and writing (taking notes);
4) Group work: group discussion, in-class or after-class;
5) Teacher’s facilitating;
6) Re-watching;
7) Students’ group work report: film reviews;
8) Summary: Teacher’s and students’ evaluation and reflection.
Assessment
1) Attendance, both physical and spiritual: 10%;
2) Reports, group or individual: 60%,(15%*4);
3) Final Exam: 30%, a term paper, no less than 300 words.
