A lot of people would live longer if they didn’t smoke.

【要点点拨】

这是个虚拟语气的句子，表示与现在事实相反的假设，主句中的谓语动词用过去将来时，从句中的谓语动词用一般过去式。另如：

If there were no air or water, there would be life.

如果没有空气，就不会有生命。

注意：在虚拟语气中，若从句谓语用be时，不管人称或单复数如何，be一律用were。如：

If I were you, I would do the same things like others.

如果我是你，我会做像其他人同样的事情。
